Orthognathic Surgery Recovery: What Patients Can Expect

Our Beverly Hills oral surgeon, Dr. Arman Dayan, and our dental team are skilled in all areas of dentistry, orthodontics, and orthopedics to provide you with a more precise evaluation. If you want to learn more about this surgery before you see us for an evaluation, keep reading.

Are You a Candidate for Oral Surgery?

This treatment is recommended to correct occlusion (bite) issues and changes in your facial profile. Before undergoing oral surgery, usually, a dentist, orthodontist, and oral surgeon will collaborate to ensure this is the best option for you.

If you suffer from these common signs and symptoms, you may be a candidate:

  • Endodontic disease

  • Tooth loss

  • Sleep apnea

  • Unequal jaw growth

  • Cleft lip or cleft palate problems

  • Impacted teeth

  • A mouth injury or facial trauma

  • A functional or aesthetic defect of the face

  • A pathological condition (such as a cyst or tumor)

  • Facial pain

If you think you may need to undergo oral surgery, we encourage you to call 310.846.8454.

What To Expect After Surgery

Orthognathic surgery is not a small feat. It could take up to a year (or longer) before your treatment is complete, so it’s best you research before fully committing.

Side Effects

The most common side effects include:

  • Pain, discomfort, and soreness.

  • Fatigue.

  • Bruising.

  • Swelling.

  • Drooling.

  • Sore throat.

  • Jaw and muscle spasms.

  • Numbness of the chin, cheeks, and lips.

After 1 Week

The first few days after orthognathic surgery, you may feel a significant amount of pain and discomfort. We urge our patients to focus mainly on resting — use cold compresses to ease the swelling, bruising, and pain. It’s also beneficial to have someone around to help you out for a few days.

And don’t forget to schedule a post-op visit at the end of week one to evaluate your healing progress.

After 1-3 Months

After about two weeks, you should start to feel back to normal (besides some minor aches and pains here and there). You should still stick to soft foods, like mashed potatoes and applesauce, to avoid any unnecessary jaw pain. By month three, you should be able to eat hard foods again, but don’t push yourself — many patients feel that they need more time, and that’s okay!

Now that you have recovered from oral surgery, the orthodontic part of your treatment can begin, which will further improve dental alignment and overall appearance of your smile.
