How Gum Grafting Works

Receding gums are problematic and even painful. You will want to consider taking care of the issue sooner than later so it does not get even worse. Gum grafting is a fantastic way to handle it readily and safely.

Gum grafting is a minimal surgical technique that involves removing small amounts of tissue from your palate. This tissue is similar to the tissues of your gums. As the palate tissue is removed, it is used to replace the missing or receding gums. If your own palate tissue cannot be used for any reason, then we can discuss using donor tissue instead.

Important notes about gum grafting:

  • Local anesthesia is used to minimize any irritation caused by the procedure.
  • Most procedures last no more than 90 minutes.
  • A second appointment may be needed to remove any sutures.
  • You may be limited to soft foods only for up to two weeks after the procedure.
  • Healing usually takes one or two weeks.
