Wisdom Teeth Q & A

What are wisdom teeth?

Wisdom teeth come in after all of your other permanent teeth. They sit at the very back of your mouth — two on top and two on bottom — and break through your gumline between the ages of 17-24.

Because wisdom teeth come in last, they’re more likely to cause problems, including overcrowding and impaction. Since they’re located at the very back of your mouth, they’re also harder to brush and floss, increasing your risk of cavities and gum disease.

Even if your wisdom teeth come in straight, Dental Arts of Beverly Hills might recommend their removal. This is because wisdom teeth aren’t necessary for good oral health.

Do impacted wisdom teeth present any symptoms?

The symptoms of an impacted wisdom tooth vary. Signs to watch out for include:

  • Pain
  • Jaw irritation
  • Gum disease
  • Damage to nearby teeth
  • Complications with orthodontic treatment
  • A cyst on your gums near the affected tooth

If you have an impacted wisdom tooth, you might also notice that food or debris gets stuck behind it, making it difficult to brush or floss.

What happens during wisdom teeth removal?

At Dental Arts of Beverly Hills, your provider performs wisdom teeth removal on-site as an outpatient procedure. Before extracting your wisdom teeth, your provider administers a local anesthetic to numb your tooth roots and gums.

Once the anesthesia sets in, they use a special machine, called the Magnetic Mallet, to remove your wisdom teeth. The Magnetic Mallet uses advanced electromagnetic technology to quickly apply high-intensity impact to your wisdom teeth. This produces an elastic wave, allowing your provider to remove the tooth. The Magnetic Mallet comes equipped with 10 standard instruments that are much more effective than traditional tools like forceps or an elevator.

Using the Magnetic Mallet is quick, gentle, and nearly painless. This speeds up the surgical extraction process and makes the experience much more enjoyable. It also allows for quicker recovery times.

What is the recovery process like after wisdom teeth removal?

Following your wisdom teeth removal, your provider gives you a list of recovery instructions. In the first few days following your operation, it’s perfectly normal to experience some pain, swelling, and general discomfort. Take your medications as prescribed, avoid brushing your dry sockets, and eat only soft foods like soup and yogurt. Within a week’s time, you should feel back to normal.
